Article 14

Equality before the law

The law treats every person the same, no matter who they are.

Real life

Two students break the same school rule. Both must face the same punishment - even if one has famous parents.

What it means

  • Article 14 says the State cannot deny anyone equality before the law or equal protection of the laws.
  • It does allow fair differences: for example, extra help for students with disabilities is not unfair discrimination.
  • What it bans is treating people differently for no good reason.
